Worship from Home, May 3, 2020

These are extraordinary times. Though we are unable to gather together for worship this morning due to the precautions surrounding COVID-19, we still have an opportunity to worship at home, and as we each do so, we do so together, united in spirit as we seek God together. Follow through this post, pausing to think about each reading, listening to each song, praying at the appropriate times, and listening to the recorded message, for a personal or family worship time at home. Please note - there is information at the bottom of this resource about how to give in this time. As well, there are copies of Our Daily Bread in the front entrance of the church.

To all who are weary and in need of rest;
to all who mourn and long for comfort;
to all who feel lost and worthless and wonder if God even cares;
to all who fall and desire victory;
to all who sin and need a Saviour;
to all who hunger and thirst for righteousness;
And to whoever else will come,
We offer welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ:
the friend of sinners,
the lover of his enemies,
the defender of the weak, and
the justifier of those who have no excuses left!

(The welcome from Immanuel Nashville)

Opening Prayer

Lord Jesus,

We turn our eyes to You this day.
We see Your majesty and mercy,
We see Your goodness and grace,
We see Your high exaltation and Your humility.

We love You.

We confess You as Lord.

We pray this in Your name,
Amen.

Adoration of Jesus Christ

Hebrews 1:1-3

Long ago God spoke to the fathers by the prophets at different times and in different ways. In these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son. God has appointed him heir of all things and made the universe through him. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of his nature, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.

As we worship today, consider who Jesus is and what He came to do.
As we worship today, may our hearts be filled with awe and comfort at Him.

Living, He loved me
Dying, He saved me
Buried, He carried my sins far away
Rising, He justified freely forever
One day He's coming
Oh glorious day, oh glorious day

Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, if God loved us in this way, we also must love one another.
We love because he first loved us.
(1 John 4:10-11, 19).

It tells of One whose loving heart
Can feel my deepest woe
Who in each sorrow bears a part
That none can bear below

O how I love Jesus…
Because He first loved me.

Confession of Sin, Assurance of Forgiveness

Merciful Lord,
pardon all the sins of my life,
of omission and commission,
of lips, life and walk,
of hard-heartedness, unbelief, pride,
of bringing dishonor on your great name,
of impurity in thought,
word and deed, of covetousness, which is idolatry.

Pardon all my sins, known and unknown, felt and
unfelt, confessed and unconfessed, remembered or forgotten.
Good Lord, hear; and hearing, forgive!
(from The Valley of Vision)

Take this time to confess any particular sins and seek forgiveness, through Jesus.

How joyful is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered!

As we see our sin,
And our far greater Saviour,
May we remember that our hope is in Him alone.

This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
'Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live

Prayer Time

Lord Jesus,

High and holy one,
Gentle and lowly one,

You invite us to bring every worry and fear,
Every anxiety and uncertainty,
Every burden and weight on our backs,

And bring them to You.

Lord Jesus,

Take our every burden,
Take our every sleepless night,
Take our every shooting pain,
Take our every sorrow,

And bear it. We can’t do it on our own. We need You.

Lord Jesus,
When all else fails,
When we grieve loss,
When we wrestle in the night,
When we await news,
In all things,
You are still ours.
You are still our earthly resting place,
You sustain our hope and still our souls.

Come, sustain our hope and still our souls.

At this time, pray through specific concerns and needs on your heart.

In days of fragile peace, Jesus is mine.
Through tearful nights of grief, Jesus is mine.
His voice commands the storm,
His presence stills my soul,
He will sustain my hope; Jesus is mine.

Jesus is mine, Jesus is mine,
When all else fails,
He still remains;
Jesus is mine.

Message

Philippians 2:1-11

If then there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, make my joy complete by thinking the same way, having the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. Everyone should look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus,
who, existing in the form of God,
did not consider equality with God
as something to be exploited.
Instead he emptied himself
by assuming the form of a servant,
taking on the likeness of humanity.
And when he had come as a man,
he humbled himself by becoming obedient
to the point of death—
even to death on a cross.
For this reason God highly exalted him
and gave him the name
that is above every name,
so that at the name of Jesus
every knee will bow—
in heaven and on earth and under the earth—
and every tongue will confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Questions for Thought:

-How did Jesus humble himself? How do we respond to His exaltation?
-What are the implications of confessing Jesus Christ as Lord of our whole lives? What areas are hard to surrender to Him?
-How do you need to grow in humility this week?
-What are areas that you need to think of yourself less and Christ, or others, more? What do you need to lay down?

As We Go

In all we do,
In our relationships,
As we grapple with our pride,
As we seek to love well,
May our goal in all things be to honour Christ.

2 Corinthians 13:11-13

“Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice. Become mature, be encouraged, be of the same mind, be at peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you… The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.“
