To all who are weary and in need of rest;
to all who mourn and long for comfort;
to all who feel lost and worthless and wonder if God even cares;
to all who fall and desire victory;
to all who sin and need a Saviour;
to all who hunger and thirst for righteousness;
And to whoever else will come,
We offer welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ:
the friend of sinners,
the lover of his enemies,
the defender of the weak, and
the justifier of those who have no excuses left!

(The welcome from Immanuel Nashville)

Opening Prayer

Lord, as we pause again at the turn of another week,
as we wait at home for news of when our situation might change,
Give us peace, give us rest.
As we face the weariness of busy days,
as we carry the burdens of our circumstances,
Give us peace, give us rest.
As we quiet our hearts,
As we tune them to Your grace,
Give us peace, give us rest, as You have promised.

Worship

Psalm 73:1, 25-28

psalm-73-25-26_iphone_original.jpg

Truly God is good to Israel,
to those who are pure in heart.
Whom have I in heaven but you?
And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

For behold, those who are far from you shall perish;
you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you.
But for me it is good to be near God;
I have made the Lord GOD my refuge,
that I may tell of all your works.

May God be the strength of our hearts, our portion forever,
our good, that we desire to be near Him -
Our greatest treasure and longing.

Listen and sing along to “How Rich a Treasure We Possess” as you worship:

How rich a treasure we possess, in Jesus Christ our Lord
His blood our ransom and defense His glory our reward
The sum of all created things are worthless in compare
For our inheritance is Him whose praise angels declare

Revelation 5:12

Worthy is the Lamb who was slaughtered
to receive power and riches
and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and blessing!

He is worthy! Worthy of our whole lives! May this be our prayer:

How precious is your steadfast love, O God!
The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. (Psalm 36:7)

Listen and sing to “You are My All in All”

You are my strength when I am weak
You are the treasure that I seek
You are my all in all
Seeking You as a precious jewel
Lord, to give up I'd be a fool
You are my all in all

Prayer Time

Psalm 16
vv. 1-2 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.”

Lord, you are our Lord, our good.

In these times, we face various sufferings and sorrows. We face COVID-19. We join in the grief of communities in our neighbouring province. We face our own health struggles, our own relational struggles, our own struggle to understand and find a way through whatever hard circumstances we face.

You, Lord, are our refuge. We find our safe place, our hiding place, our help in You. You are our good.

vv. 3 - 4 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
in whom is all my delight.
The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;
their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips.

Lord, we look forward to the time when we can be with one another again. We rejoice in one another! Forgive us as we go after other things for our help and satisfaction - make us wholeheartedly Yours.

vv. 5-6 The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot.
The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

Lord, You are our portion, our cup - You are the One who satisfies us, You are the One who provides for us, You are the One whom we entrust our lives to - and as hard as this life may be at times, we can genuinely say that You have been good to us; better a hard life with You than an easy life without You. We look forward to our beautiful inheritance - our eternal home in heaven!

v. 7 I bless the LORD who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart instructs me.

Lord, be our wisdom! Be our guide! Even in the darkness of the night, when we’re tired and groping around, when we can’t see, be our light, and lead us!

vv. 8-10 I have set the LORD always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
my flesh also dwells secure.
For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
or let your holy one see corruption.

Lord, be our all. Be first place. Keep our eyes fixed on You. Keep us from distractions. Remind us of Your presence, that we not be shaken, despite our circumstances. Even in difficult circumstances, we can rejoice - we will rejoice! Because we live securely in Your care. Our hope is in eternity - eternal life with Christ, because of Christ. Thank You for that promise. Give us peace.

v. 11 You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Lord, forgive us for seeking life in places other than You. Show us the joy that comes from being in Your presence. Give us that joy now as we seek You!

Take this time now to pray for specific needs and concerns on your heart.

We are people that Jesus Christ has come to save,
Come to die for,
Come to make new,
Come to have first place.

He not merely gives us a new chance in life,
A new life; He becomes our life.

Listen and sing along to “Christ is All”

I've found a treasure that can't be taken
Found a well that won't run dry
O worldly pleasure be now forsaken
Behold what love what life is mine

Christ is all! Christ is all! And my song shall ever be - Christ is All!

When life is passing and strength is fading
I'll see the One that I adore
Let this world vanish, oh give me Jesus
My great desire, my true reward

Message

Read Philippians 1:28b-21

Verse-of-the-Day-2014-08-12.png

What does it matter? Only that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is proclaimed, and in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice because I know this will lead to my salvation through your prayers and help from the Spirit of Jesus Christ. My eager expectation and hope is that I will not be ashamed about anything, but that now as always, with all courage, Christ will be highly honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

As We Go

As we go and go about our day, listen to and sing along to “Take My Life and Let It Be.” May this be your prayer of commitment to your Saviour - may He be Your all.

Ephesians 3:17-19

[May] Christ . . . dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God

Opening Prayer

Lord our God, Our Lord Jesus,

On this Lord’s day,
We take this time out of our day,
Though we could be doing any number of things,
To seek You,
To worship You,
To know You.

Refresh us by Your love,
Restore us by Your grace.

We come to You this morning.

Call to Worship

Psalm 150

ps150-everything.jpg

Hallelujah!
Praise God in his sanctuary.
Praise him in his mighty expanse.
Praise him for his powerful acts;
praise him for his abundant greatness.

Praise him with trumpet blast;
praise him with harp and lyre.
Praise him with tambourine and dance;
praise him with strings and flute.
Praise him with resounding cymbals;
praise him with clashing cymbals.

Let everything that breathes praise the LORD.
Hallelujah!

We take joy in the Lord our salvation, our strength. Listen and sing along to this medley of “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” and “Joyful, Joyful”

Deuteronomy 10: 14, 17-21:

The heavens, indeed the highest heavens, belong to the LORD your God, as does the earth and everything in it… the LORD your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, mighty, and awe-inspiring God, showing no partiality and taking no bribe. He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the resident alien, giving him food and clothing. You are also to love the resident alien, since you were resident aliens in the land of Egypt. You are to fear the LORD your God and worship him. Remain faithful to him and take oaths in his name. He is your praise and he is your God, who has done for you these great and awe-inspiring works your eyes have seen.

See our God. See Him reigning. See His love for us. See Him bringing us safely home. See His faithfulness. See the great things He has done and put your confidence to Him.

As you consider who God is and what He has done, listen and sing along to “Behold Our God”

Behold our God, seated on his throne
Come, let us adore him
Behold our king, nothing can compare
Come, let us adore him

Confession of Sin, Assurance of Forgiveness

“If we say, ‘We have no sin,‘ we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:8-9)

Our Lord God,

Holy is Your name, Your whole being. You are pure and completely righteous. We sin. How we need Your cleansing work, Your righteous-making work, in us.

Lord, give us eyes to see ourselves honestly and clearly.
Give us eyes to see our sin,
Hard as it may be for us to see.
Much as we might want to justify ourselves,
Humble us, that we may see our sin for what it is:
Vile, abhorrent to you, bringing destruction and death.
Help us to see our sinful nature,
At war with the Spirit in us.
Reveal our sin.

Lord, we confess our sin… (At this moment, take some time to confess particular sin).

“If anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father - Jesus Christ the righteous one. He himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins.” (1 John 2:1-2)

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for bearing the condemnation and punishment for my sin. We praise You for Your mercy and grace for us!

Listen to “Jesus, Thank You”:

By Your perfect sacrifice I’ve been brought near
Your enemy You’ve made Your friend
Pouring out the riches of Your glorious grace
Your mercy and Your kindness know no end

Your blood has washed away my sin
Jesus, thank You

Prayer Time

Reader 1: Lord, I appeal to you.
My God I trust in you…
Reader 2: No one who waits for you
will be disgraced.
1: Make your ways known to me, Lord;
teach me your paths.
2: Guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are the God of my salvation ;
1: I wait for you all day long.
Remember, Lord, your compassion
2: and your faithful love,
for they have existed from antiquity.
All: God, redeem Your people from all all our distresses.
(from Psalm 25)

Lord, Your faithful love and compassion have existed from forever past. That’s the love and compassion You have for us today. We can be confident in You! We can be confident in You, moreover, because Jesus has saved us and brought us safe in Your care.

So as we worship from home, in the midst of social distancing or sheltering at home, we remember that though our circumstances are new, and we may feel afflicted, Your mercies are also brand new every morning. Lord, in our distresses and anxieties and concerns, remind us of Your faithful love and good compassion!

With that in mind, we pray…

(At this moment, take time to pray for specific prayer needs on your heart).

Lord, thank You for Your faithful love and compassion -
We pray all these things in Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Message

First, watch this brief video dramatizing the story of Paul and Silas in prison in Philippi from Acts 16:16-26

ScriptureType-Philippians1-6.jpg

Philippians 1:1-11

Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus: To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, including the overseers and deacons. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I give thanks to my God for every remembrance of you, always praying with joy for all of you in my every prayer, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Indeed, it is right for me to think this way about all of you, because I have you in my heart, and you are all partners with me in grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. For God is my witness, how deeply I miss all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.

And I pray this: that your love will keep on growing in knowledge and every kind of discernment, so that you may approve the things that are superior and may be pure and blameless in the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God.

As We Go

Consider:
-
How can we treasure one another, even though we are social-distancing?
-
How can we encourage one another with what God is doing, even in hard circumstances?
-Whose spiritual maturity will you pray for today?

May we see God at work in us,
May we fix our eyes on Him,
May He lead us in this time.

As we close, listen to “Be Thou My Vision”

Grace to you
and peace
from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen. (Philippians 1:2)

Prayer

Lord Jesus,

As we come from the darkness and grief of Good Friday,
Remembering that You died for our sin,
We rejoice in this Resurrection Sunday -
You are alive! Death could not hold you, the God of life!

So on this day,
We do rejoice,
For You are alive and reigning
And with us today!

Give us the hope that brings today!

In Your name we pray,
Amen.

He is Alive!

Risen Indeed.jpg

Luke 24:1-8

On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb. They went in but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothes. So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground. “Why are you looking for the living among the dead?” asked the men. “He is not here, but he has risen! Remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee, saying, ‘It is necessary that the Son of Man be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day’ And they remembered his words.”

Christ the Lord is Risen today - we sing Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

Reader 1: “The Lord has risen!”
Reader 2: “He has risen indeed!”
Reader 1: “The Lord has risen!”
Reader 2: “He has risen indeed!”
Reader 1: “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? Death has been swallowed up in victory!”
Reader 2: “Christ has risen indeed!”
Reader 1: “Jesus said, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.’”
Reader 2: “Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Reader 1: “The Lord has risen!”
All: “He has risen indeed! Alleluia!”

For joy awakes as dawning light, when Christ's disciples lift their eyes.
Alive He stands, their Friend and King; Christ, Christ He is risen.

Christ is risen, He is risen indeed! Oh, sing hallelujah.
Join the chorus, sing with the redeemed; Christ is risen, He is risen indeed.

We rejoice that we have a living Saviour, whom death cannot hold. Christ is Risen indeed!

Christ lay in bonds of death, sacrificed for our sins.
He is now arisen and has brought life to us;
therefore we shall be joyful, praise God and be thankful to Him
and sing hallelujah. Hallelujah! (Martin Luther)

We see Christ crucified for us,
But alive forevermore, and so sing along to Come Behold The Wondrous Mystery:

Slain by death the God of life
But no grave could e’er restrain Him
Praise the Lord; He is alive!

What a foretaste of deliverance
How unwavering our hope
Christ in power resurrected
As we will be when he comes

What is your only comfort in life and death?

That I am not my own,
but belong with body and soul,
both in life and in death,
to my faithful Saviour Jesus Christ.

He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood,
and has set me free from all the power of the devil.

He also preserves me in such a way that without the will of my heavenly Father, not a hair can fall from my head;
indeed, all things must work together for my salvation.

(Heidelberg Catechism Q. 1)

Whatever our circumstances,
Whether we live or face death,
Christ is our hope.

Listen to “Christ our Hope in Life and Death”:

What truth can calm the troubled soul?
God is good, God is good
Where is His grace and goodness known?
In our great Redeemer's blood

O sing hallelujah! Our hope springs eternal
O sing hallelujah! Now and ever we confess
Christ our hope in life and death

Prayer Time

If Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins… If we have put our hope in Christ for this life only, we should be pitied more than anyone. But as it is, Christ has been raised from the dead… he must reign until he puts all things under his feet.” (1 Corinthians 15:17-25).

Exalted Lord Jesus,

You are alive, and You are reigning! Your resurrection is the greatest of news for our faith. Your resurrection guarantees the forgiveness of our sins, our hope for eternity, our security that we belong to You who reigns. If we belong to the One who raises the dead, we have incredible hope in this world where death is a reality; we need not fear it anymore. You are restoring all things, making all things new. So in this world affected and infected by all sorts of hard and evil things, we can still move forward, look forward, to seeing Your best yet to come.

So Lord, give us courage in these hard days,
Give us patience when we can’t wait for the better to come,
Give us peace in our anxious moments,
Give us strength in our weak moments,
Give us wisdom in our unsure moments,
Remind us of Your Gospel in every moment,
So that our hope is in what You’ve done in Your great saving power
To free us from our sin, to make us alive, to keep us safely home
By Your amazing grace.

We need You, Lord, and thank You that You are abundantly available…

In this time, bring specific prayer requests to God…

Thank You for Your great, resurrection power at work in us today.
In Jesus’ living name, we pray,
Amen.

In this time, we are reminded that our world is broken, and we look forward to God making it new again;
We keep our eyes fixed on Him, who reigns - He is worthy of our love, honour, and praise.

The song “Is He Worthy?” invites us to join together to recognize the world’s brokenness and God’s goodness. It is a “call and response” song. The leader sings the first part of the line - a question - and everyone responds with a short phrase. From your own home, sing along with the responses (or the whole song!)

The responses are as follows:
Verse 1: “We do” (ie, Do you feel the world is broken? IT IS).
Verse 2: “It is“
Verse 3: “He does”

The song comes from Revelation 5:9-10: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slaughtered, and you purchased a people for God by your blood from every tribe and language and people and nation. You made them a kingdom and priests to our God…”

Message

Turn to John 20:1-21. If you have a Bible with you, please read through the passage first; if not, click here to read it.

How might you be anxious or fearful in these times?
How might this time be a “new normal” for you?
How do we see our Saviour alive and still rejoice?

We have every hope and purpose for today and tomorrow because Jesus lives.

As We Go…

Now may the God of peace,
Who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus -
The great Shepherd of the sheep -
Through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

Equip you with everything good to do his will,
Working in us what is pleasing in his sight,
Through Jesus Christ,
To whom be glory forever and ever.
Amen.

Good Friday: Worship from Home

On this Good Friday, though we are social distancing in our own homes, we still remember together our Saviour’s death on the cross, and the salvation it brings us. Follow this post for our Good Friday service, reflecting at each point.

Our worship and reflection is divided into three parts, following the structure of Romans 5:8:

“God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

In part one, we will consider God’s great, faithful love and how because of His love, He gave us Jesus.
In part two, we will consider our own great need, our sin, and our helplessness to do something about it.
In part three, we will consider Christ’s death for us, which brings us salvation and eternal life.

As well, we ask that you light three candles or place three lamps or electric candelabras in the area you worship. These represent Jesus, the Light of the world, whose life is the light of man, but whose life was given, snuffed out that day we remember.

Prayer

O Lord our God,

You who are the High and Holy One,
The Mighty, yet Merciful One,
The Faithfully Loving God,
You have come, lived among us, perfect in every way,
And went to the cross for our us,
For the forgiveness of our sin,
For our salvation,
For the redemption of the world.

On this sorrowful yet joyful day,
We turn to You, look to You, and remember
Your death,
For in it, we find life.

We pray this in Jesus’ name,
Amen.

1. God Shows His Love For Us

The LORD is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
The LORD is good to all,
and his mercy is over all that he has made. (Psalm 145:8-9).

How great, how wonderful, how unending, how marvelous is God’s faithful love for us!

Facebook_Covers_04_John_3_16.png

God’s one and only Son, Jesus Christ, come to save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21), come to give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). He is the long-promised, long awaited Saviour, fulfillment of God’s promises throughout the Old Testament.

See our Saviour.

See Jesus Christ. See His great love.

Love brought thee from heaven to earth,
from earth to the cross,
from the cross to the grave.
Love cause thee to be weary, hungry, tempted,
scorned, scourged, buffeted,
spat upon, crucified, and pierced.
Love led thee to bow thy head in death.
(From “Love” in The Valley of Vision).

Where Love Took Jesus

We encourage to take your own Bible to read the following Scriptures from the Gospels of Mark and Luke. Read slowly, read reflecting on the depth of His love in His actions to bring salvation to us, sinners in need of His mercy.

See Jesus in the Garden, praying, agonizing, awaiting his betrayal and arrest.

LUKE 22:39-46

And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

See Jesus betrayed with a kiss, arrested, and abandoned by his followers.

MARK 14:43-50

And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.” And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, “Rabbi!” And he kissed him. And they laid hands on him and seized him. But one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled.” And they all left him and fled.

See Jesus turn and look at Peter, who had denied knowing his Lord three times.

Luke 22:54-62

Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest’s house, and Peter was following at a distance. And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

See Jesus on trial.

lUKE 22:66-23:5

And they led him away to their council, and they said, “If you are the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, and if I ask you, you will not answer. But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” So they all said, “Are you the Son of God, then?” And he said to them, “You say that I am.” Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.”

Then the whole company of them arose and brought him before Pilate.  And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king.”  And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.” Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no guilt in this man.” But they were urgent, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee even to this place.”

See Jesus sentenced to die.

MARK 15:11-15

The chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?” And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

See Jesus beaten and mocked

Mark 15:16-20

And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.

With a moment of silence, extinguish one of the lights or candles.

Pause for a moment to consider the weight of Jesus’ situation: the perfect, mighty, holy Son of God humbled and suffering.

2. While We Were Still Sinners

We see Jesus, the Man of Sorrows, and His arrest, His trial, and His conviction, with the flogging, beating, and mocking he endured before being led away to be crucified.

As we see Jesus on the cross,
Consider our part in His death,
As we hear and pray along to the prayer, “I Am To Blame.”

"I Am To Blame," Prayer from Piercing Heaven, edited Robert Elmer

In our place, He stood condemned,
Bearing the guilt and punishment for our sin.

Jesus lived the perfect life that we could never have
And died the death that you and I deserved.

Confession

First, we examine our hearts and lives, and we invite God to do so, to reveal and convict us of sin:

Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:23-24).

Take a moment to quietly let God speak, reveal and convict of sin.

Second, pray:

Lord,

I have drawn away from the sound of your voice,
fearful of what you might speak, fearful
of what obedience might require,
for I have sinned, O Father, and I am pained
at this thought, and shamed
to bring my faults into the light.

Pause to make specific confession of sin in prayer to God.

Lord, I turn from my sins, I repent,
I renounce them all,
And I turn to You.
Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Forgive me, O Lord, lest I despair.
Restore me, lest I be forever lost.
For your pardon alone
is sufficient to my peace;
and your death to my resurrection.
Embrace me again to life
and to right standing with you, O God,
And to the fellowship of love
and compassion that is your church.

I am always, every moment, in need of you.

Amen.

(Adapted from Douglas McKelvey, Every Moment Holy, pp 237-239)

Why was it necessary for Christ, the Redeemer to die?

Since death is the punishment for sin, Christ died willingly in our place to deliver us from the power and penalty of sin and bring us back to God. By his substitutionary atoning death, he alone redeems us from hell and gains for us forgiveness of sin, righteousness, and everlasting life. (New City Catechism, Question 26).

With a moment of silence, extinguish the second candle.

3. Christ Died For Us

See God’s great, faithful love for us.

See the depth of your sin.

See the Saviour, Jesus Christ, God’s Son, crucified on the cross for you.

LUKE 23:26-27, 32-46

And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus. And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who were mourning and lamenting for him.

Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments. And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!” The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.”

One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, while the sun’s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.

JOHN 19:30

When Jesus had received some sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Message: See Your Saviour

romans-5-8_desktop_large.jpg

Lord,
You have loved us with an everlasting love.
You have seen the depth of our sin,
And have not turned your back on us.
From the beginning, You have been working
To bring salvation from sin,
To bring restoration,
To make all things new.

Come and make us new
As we see Jesus on the cross,
Dying for each one of us,
On that darkest of days.

In Jesus’ saving name,
Amen

In a brief moment of silence to reflect, snuff out the final candle, remembering Christ’s death and burial.

Palm Sunday: Worship from Home

These are extraordinary times. Though we are unable to gather together for worship this morning due to the precautions surrounding COVID-19, we still have an opportunity to worship at home, and as we each do so, we do so together, united in spirit as we seek God together. Follow through this post, pausing to think about each reading, listening to each song, praying at the appropriate times, and listening to the recorded message, for a personal or family worship time at home.

COVID19+Worship+Banner.png

It’s Palm Sunday. The beginning of Holy Week, the week that we remember Jesus’ last week before His death on the cross. Today, we remember Jesus’ triumphal entry, how He rode into Jerusalem to the praises of the crowds, riding in on a donkey. It’s called Palm Sunday because of the palm branches the crowds waved as He passed by them, a sign of praise and respect for the King.

Opening Prayer

Mighty God,

We thank You that You saw us in our need, helpless and dying on our own, and did not stand by passively. You became actively involved in our lives and brought us a Saviour. We thank You that You are still actively involved in our lives and this world, that You see us in our need and come to be among us. We pray that as we come to this time of worship - in our homes, but together in Spirit, united in Christ - we would see You, see Your might and power, and rest in that. Help us as we worship to see You more clearly, to cherish Christ more deeply, to be more aware of the Holy Spirit in us, to be strengthened today.

We pray this in Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Call to Worship

Psalm 24:1-2, 7-10

The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof,
the world and those who dwell therein,
for he has founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers.

Lift up your heads, O gates!
And be lifted up, O ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The LORD, strong and mighty,
the LORD, mighty in battle!
Lift up your heads, O gates!
And lift them up, O ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The LORD of hosts,
he is the King of glory! Selah

Psalm_24_7-8-3840x2160_watermarked.jpg

Amid everything we face, the challenges and threats of the day, we have a mighty and marvelous King, the Lord to whom the whole earth belongs, strong and mighty. He is our good King, our good Father. So we look to Him.

Worship with the hymn, “Jesus Shall Reign” -

To our King be highest praise
Rising through eternal days
Just and faithful, He shall reign
Jesus shall reign

He shall reign each moment, over everything. Praise Him indeed!

Psalm 118:1, 14-17, 23-26

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!

The Lord is my strength and my song;
    he has become my salvation.
 Glad songs of salvation
are in the tents of the righteous:
“The right hand of the Lord does valiantly,
the right hand of the Lord exalts,
the right hand of the Lord does valiantly!”

I shall not die, but I shall live,
and recount the deeds of the Lord.

This is the Lord's doing;
it is marvelous in our eyes.
This is the day that the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Save us, we pray, O Lord!
O Lord, we pray, give us success!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
We bless you from the house of the Lord.

We remember what God has done for us and we thank him! In every time, He is our strength, He is our help, He is our salvation, and so we praise Him.

Consider God’s mighty salvation as we listen to Mighty to Save -
”Savior - He can move the mountains
My God is Mighty to save
He is Mighty to save
Forever - Author of salvation
He rose and conquered the grave
Jesus conquered the grave”

Though we may be facing strange and changing times, we have a God who does not change, who remains faithful and good and continues to be good to us. As we consider what is not good in the situation around COVID-19, let us pause to consider how God has been incredibly good to us as we listen to and sing the Doxology.

Prayer Time

As we begin Holy Week, and we see our Saviour King entering into Jerusalem on his way to the cross, we consider our sin, the high price He paid to atone for it and bring us forgiveness for and freedom from it. With that, we pray…

O King of Glory,
we confess that our praise of your majesty has often been faint,
our performance as citizens of your kingdom treasonous.
For we have surrendered to the enemy by our secret and our known sins.
For our treason you died, Lord Jesus.

For our restoration, you rose again.
Draw us closer to you in this Holy Week,
that our eyes may catch the vision of your tears,
and our hearts, the wonder of your grace.
By the Holy Spirit’s continuing discipline,
let us be loyal and loving servants of the King.
Praise be to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

(In bulletin from Rochester Christian Reformed Church, Rochester, New York)

O King of Glory,

We still wrestle with all that is wrong in this world.
We see COVID-19 and its effects, and we cry out,
”Lord, save! Lord, help!”
We see all the ways we are weary and worn out, and we cry out,
”Lord, save! Lord, help!”
We see our lack of wisdom and wonder where to go from here, and we cry out,
”Lord, save! Lord, help!”
We see our loved ones and find it all the more difficult to help and be by their side, and we cry out,
”Lord, save! Lord, help!”
We see our own sin, though we are saved and love You, we still wrestle with it, grieve it, repent of it day after day, but still find ourselves so weak, and we cry out,
”Lord, save! Lord, help!”
In every need, we cry out,
”Lord, save! Lord, help!”

At this time, take a moment to pray for specific needs on your heart.

Lord, we thank You that You hear our prayer, that you are with us, that You help, that You save.
We thank You in Jesus’ mighty, saving name,
Amen.

As we consider our need and God’s mighty power on this Palm Sunday, listen to this song, "Hosanna,” and consider prayer and praise it contains - make it your prayer.

Go in Confidence

As we go, consider the assurance that we who are in Christ, saved by Him, belong to God, and that through uncertain days and turbulent times, He will hold us fast and bring us safely home.

Perfect submission, all is at rest
I in my Savior am happy and blessed
Watching and waiting, looking above
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love

As We Go…

Our Lord,

As we enter this Holy Week, may we see Christ more clearly, on the road to the cross, lifted up there, for us. May we take to heart the depth of our need, the depth of our sin and helplessness because of it, but how much greater Your salvation is, Your work to bring us from death to life. Make us more aware of Your saving work in our lives, and the eternity You are bringing us to. Help us to love You ever more.

“The Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26).

Call to Worship

“Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean form an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.“ (Hebrews 10:19-23)

Think about that phrase: he who promised is faithful. How have you seen God’s faithfulness in your life? How will you trust Him to be faithful today, and in the future?

We have a sure and strong hope. Not in our own ability to “do,” but in what Christ has done. Not in what we can do to protect ourselves, but secure in Christ’s care. Not in being able to save ourselves from catastrophe or COVID-19, but saved from sin and to eternal life by Christ.

We have confidence to draw near to the God of all power
For our hope in this world and in this day and in this week.
We confess Christ as our hope, and He is faithful.

Opening Prayer

Father God,

You are the faithful one.
You never leave or forsake us,
And Your mercies are new every morning.
If You have given Christ to die for us,
We can be sure You will provide for our every need,
And we trust You to bring us safely home.

Help us to keep our eyes on You
The unchanging, wholly trustworthy One,
In these changing, unknown days.

You are worthy of all our praise.

In Jesus’ name we pray,
Amen.

Worship in Song

As we see all that is going on around us, we fix our eyes on Christ, the foundation of our hope:

Turn your eyes to the morning
And see Christ the Lion awake
What a glorious dawn, fear of death is gone
For we carry His life in our veins

Listen to “Turn Your Eyes”

Psalm 42:1-5:

I waited patiently for the Lord;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.
He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.

Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust,
who does not turn to the proud,
to those who go astray after a lie!
You have multiplied, O Lord my God,
your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us;
none can compare with you!

May we wait patiently for the Lord,
Seeing Him as our great and only hope,
Trusting Him to make us secure each day,
And trust in Him.

Listen to “The Solid Rock” as we remember that:

When darkness veils His lovely face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil

Pray

Take your Bible and read Psalm 102. Click here to read Psalm 102

Many of the Psalms are laments, with the Psalmist bringing before God his plight, his plea for help, his need, and asking God to help, trusting and resting in God’s faithful love. Psalm 102 is one such Psalm. Lament is important for us, because it directs our need to the faithfully loving God who can do something about it.

Following the structure of Psalm 102, write and pray your own lament:

Calling for God to hear

“Hear my prayer, O Lord; let my cry come to you!
Do not hide your face from me in the day of my distress!
Incline your ear to me; answer me speedily fin the day when I call!” (v. 1-2)

Begin by praying, “Lord, hear! I need you!”

Laying out your complaint

"My heart is struck down…
My days are like an evening shadow;
I wither away like grass.” (v. 3, 11)

Where do you see need? What struggle do you face? What do you struggle to understand? What is not right in your world or the world at large that is not right?

Seeing God and His character

“But you, O Lord, are enthroned forever;
you are remembered throughout all generations.” (v. 12)

Who is God? What does Scripture say His is?

Prayer for Help

“You will arise and have compassion on Zion…“ (v. 13)

How do you need God’s help? Where do we need His compassion?

Confidence in God

“He regards the prayer of the destitute
and does not despise their prayer.
you are the same, and your years have no end.
The children of your servants shall dwell secure;
their offspring shall be established before you. (v. 17, 27-28)

Because of who God is, what He has done, what He does, what He has promised, thank Him for the hope and confidence we have in Him.

Pray:

Lord, You hear our prayer, and you do not despise it. You are the eternal God, King on Your throne, reigning over this whole universe, and you are the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. We thank You for our salvation through Christ and that we are held fast in Your strong and sure care. In this ever-changing world, we trust that we do dwell secure because we belong to You.

We bring to you the concerns of our day and on our hearts
(Take this time now to pray silently or together as a family for any need and concern you may have.)

Thank You for all the promises in Your word that You are with us, You care for us, You love us so. Help us hold fast to the hope we have in You.

In Jesus’ name we pray,
Amen.

As we look to Him, we rest assured that He will watch over us, keep us, love us faithfully, and hold us fast. With this hope, we have great peace. Listen to “He Will Hold Me Fast” as you remember that.

When I fear my faith will fail, Christ will hold me fast
When the tempter would prevail, He will hold me fast
I could never keep my hold through life’s fearful path
For my love is often cold - He must hold me fast

“God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling.” (Psalm 46:1-3)

Psalm 46 puts steel in our spines and calm in our hearts as we watch our world tearing itself apart and, try as we do, we can’t stop the foolish self-destruction all around — right, left and center. But God reigns, God is present, God is with us. No need to freak out.

Ray Ortlund, Jr.

How does Psalm 46 give you peace in these troubled times?

Prayer

Our Lord God,
You are the mighty God, the sovereign God, the ever-present God.
You are our ever present help.
Even though we are gathered in different places,
We still seek You, worship You, love You together as Your people here,
United in Christ, His Spirit at work in each of us.

As we seek You,
Strengthen our spirits and calm our hearts,
So that though the world be in uncertain and chaotic,
As we see You,
We know the peace, hope, and joy You bring.
We look to You and love You.

In Jesus’ holy name we pray,
Amen.

Though this is a time that may threaten to cause anxiety or fear, not knowing what even the next hour or day holds, we have an even stronger hope, an even mightier God, an even greater Saviour, and an even more sure hope in eternity.

So in the face of fear and anxiety, we have every cause to rejoice:

For His perfect love will never change,
And His mercies never cease,
But follow us through all our days
With the certain hope of peace.

Rejoice, rejoice, let every tongue rejoice!
One heart, one voice, O church of Christ, rejoice!

(A prayer from Every Moment Holy, by Doug McKelvey).

Lord Jesus, you are the faithful God, the faithfully loving God, who are so good to us in so many ways we can’t even count. We pray that as we face these uncertain days, with the spread of COVID-19, You would remind us of Your presence with us, to help us, sustain us, and bring us peace. Help us as we self-isolate, that we may have contentment in moments of struggling to do so. Help those of us who may have weaker immune systems or other health problems, to remain healthy. Heal those who have contracted COVID-19. Help the health-care workers on the front lines of battling COVID-19, that they may remain strong and rested, both physically and mentally.

We bring to you the concerns of our day and on our hearts
(Take this time now to pray silently or together as a family for any need and concern you may have.)

Lord, we are glad that we are able to come to you with our every need,
That you hear our every plea,
That you are able and willing to answer,
That you faithfully know our good, even better than we do.

With this in mind, we pray all these things in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Hymn of Assurance

Benediction

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory
